BOY ON PHONE, 2024

DISCUSSION
Sam’s “Boy on Phone” demonstrates an intriguing evolution in their artistic journey, offering a vivid exploration of human expression through oil paint. The piece captures a moment of introspection and solitude, accentuated by the bold interplay of color and texture. The blue and red hues juxtapose emotional states—the cool detachment of the boy’s expression contrasts sharply with the vibrant energy of the red telephone, which becomes the focal point of the composition.
The textured application of oil paint lends the work a tactile quality, evoking a rawness that enhances the emotional resonance. The deliberate use of light and shadow across the figure’s face and clothing conveys a subtle depth, drawing the viewer into the subject’s contemplative state. The cord of the phone, rendered in a vibrant red, spirals outward in a dynamic motion, adding a sense of connection and movement to an otherwise still moment.
This painting reflects Sam’s continued ability to distill complex emotions into a singular, relatable image. It balances a sense of intimacy with broader narrative potential, inviting the viewer to ponder the unseen conversation or the internal monologue of the subject. The work also showcases Sam’s characteristic skill in capturing the essence of contemporary moments while infusing them with timeless artistic techniques. It’s an evocative piece that speaks to themes of communication, isolation, and introspection.
Collage Experiments
In this version I have used a collage approach to the image adding additional layers digitally and expanding the work horizontally.

The collage is visually busier, with more layers for the viewer to unpack. The oil painting’s simplicity allows for a more immediate emotional connection, while the collage asks the viewer to slow down and analyze its components. The collage amplifies the sense of tension and unease, which might resonate differently depending on the viewer’s interpretation of its fragmented aesthetic.
